Tournament Format: A Unique Three-Stage Competition
The tournament is structured into three distinct stages to maximize both strategic matchups and fair competition.
1. Stage 1 – Group Phase
The 16 teams are divided into four groups of four. Each group includes a top-seeded team to ensure balanced competition, with the remaining teams assigned according to a “snake” seeding order. Teams in each group face off in a round-robin format, where every match counts towards advancing to the next phase.
2. Stage 2 – Round-Robin Showdown
The top two teams from each group move forward to an eight-team round-robin. Here, teams that already faced each other in Stage 1 retain their prior results to avoid rematches, adding a layer of strategy and significance to each prior game.
3. Stage 3 – Knockout Finale
The top four teams in Stage 2 progress to the semi-finals, where first and fourth place teams and second and third place teams clash. The tournament concludes with the bronze and gold medal matches, cementing final rankings.
In total, the event will feature 52 matches across all three stages, demanding both endurance in early rounds and peak performance during the finals.
Match Structure and Scoring
Each team match follows a set order of play:
- Mixed Doubles
- Women’s Singles (with a different player than in mixed doubles)
- Men’s Singles (also a different player)
- Women’s Doubles or Men’s Doubles*
- Men’s Doubles or Women’s Doubles*
*In matches 4 and 5, the sequence is determined by the captain of the lower-ranked team after the first match.
Individual matches are played in a best-of-three format, with the first team to reach eight total game wins taking the match.
A Celebration of Gender Equality
The Mixed Team World Cup represents a landmark in gender inclusivity within table tennis, with each team comprising three to four players of each gender. The event features a blend of men’s and women’s singles, doubles, and mixed doubles, captivating fans and creating diverse, high-stakes matchups.
